오늘날 이슈가 되는 인성교육에서 인성에 관한 정의는 의견이 분분하 다. ‘사람의 성품’ 혹은 ‘각 개인이 가지는 사고와 태도 및 행동특성’ 등 으로 정의되는데 퇴계가 말하는 인성은 퇴계의 주요사상 중 하나인 ‘리 발’개념에 대한 올바른 이해의 바탕 위에서 정의할 수 있다. 퇴계사상에 대한 일반적인 이해 가운데 하나인 ‘호발’은 고봉과의 사 칠논변에서 퇴계의 입장을 나타내는 말로 ‘사단은 리에서 발하고 칠정은 기에서 발한다’라는 문구를 근거로 ‘리’와 ‘기’ 양쪽에서 각각 발한다고 보았다. 하지만 퇴계가 사칠논변에서 말하고자 하는 바는 ‘호발’이 아닌 ‘리발’이었고, ‘기발’은 ‘리발’과 동등한 층위에서 말해지는 ‘호발’이 아닌 ‘리발’이 아니라고 하는 사태를 지칭하는 개념어이자 사유의 착각을 지 칭하는 말이다. 그런 의미에서 퇴계가 말하는 리발은 존재하는 것치고 나쁜 것은 없 다는 ‘다 좋다’라는 개념과 있는 것치고 완전하지 않음이 없다는 ‘완전 함’을 의미한다. 따라서 퇴계가 말하는 인성은 하늘의 명을 품부한 성을 지닌 인간이 나쁠리 없다는 인식 하에 다 좋을 뿐이라는 것과 태어날 때 부터 무언가 하자가 있어 그것을 메꾸려는 방식의 교육이 아닌 사람으로 태어난 모든 존재는 완전하기에 그 완전함을 바로 알게하는 것이 퇴계의 인성교육인 것이다.
The definition of personality in the issue of character education today is disagreeable. It is defined by ‘personality’ or ‘individual person' s thinking, attitude and behavioral characteristics. The personality that Toegye is talking about can be defined on the basis of correct understanding of the concept of realization of Li. One of the common understandings of ‘Hobal’(doctrine of Theory of Moral Emotions and Feelings(七情) of Toegye), which refers to the position of Toegye in KoBong's Four Seven debate(四七論爭). Based on the phrase ‘the moral emotional beginnings(四端) realize from Li, every emotion(七情) realize from Ki’ I saw each from each side. However, in the case of Toegye's comment on Four Seven debate(四七論爭), it is a concept that refers to the fact that it is not ‘realization of Ki’ but ‘realization of Li’, and ‘Hobal’ is not ‘realization of Li’. It is an It is an illusion of thinking. In this sense, Toegye speaks of the concept of being good and that there is nothing wrong with it, and it means that there is no incompleteness. Therefore, the personality that Toegye talks about is that everything is good with the recognition that human beings with naturally prosperous nature are not bad, and that all beings born as human beings, It is Toegye's humanity education to know immediately its completeness. In this sense, Toegye has a great value as a scholar to lead modern society in the 21st century in that the personality of Toegye possesses the meaning of ‘realization of Li’ that it is all good and perfect, and it tells the value of all good and perfect human beings.
