We have understood that school curriculum should be designed and implemented by deep learn ing and
authentic understanding. So, How can we approach these aims in curriculum development? This article
intends to study the integration of competence-based education and understanding by design. These two
elements have been studied separately in recent studies. Findings indicate that the educational values and
positions of both sides are very similar. Competence-based education is focused on developing the abilities
to abandon fragmented knowledge education and the way to understand the content and therefor perform
better. It further focuses on enduring understanding. This study is based on the above and explores the integration methods of both. Competence-based education aims to improve the uselessness of invaluable
knowledge which is not useful in the context of memorization and acquisition of the expression and the
relevant experience and practice, either. It has a lot of things in common with understanding by design
which emphasizes the enduring understanding of learners, especially the ways to build a curriculum and
manage it. In this study, we have explored the integration methods setting importance on the backward
design. Integration of competency-based education with UbD is discussed by two lines within curriculum
development. First, competency and understanding as educational aims, contents, teaching method, evaluation
can be integrated by key competency and authentic understanding. Second, we may teach competency itself
as content in instructional settings. In the future we should study the approach to authentic integration of
the two.
