It is thought that the current pursuit of excellence in Korea, based on
academic achievement, is not suitable to the current times. It also inevitably
results in endless conflicts with the pursuit of equality. Therefore, the current
education paradigm has to be drastically changed in order for education to
embody the genuine excellence demanded by today while being compatible
with equality. Especially, excellence based on academic achievement and
equality based on ensuring equal educational opportunities have to be
pursued in a direction corresponding to the development of pluralistic and
horizontal abilities required by knowledge-based society. This change is
ultimately possible through a thorough concern for various abilities,
characters, and aptitudes of the students and maximizing their development
through education customized to each student\'s needs.
