This study was designed to investigate the effect of body image satisfaction, stress coping style, binge eating on depression in obese high school girls.
For this study, I proposed the following questions:
First, is there any significant effect between body image satisfaction and depression in obese high school girls?
Second, is there any significant effect between stress coping style and depression in obese high school girls?
Third, is there any significant effect between binge eating and depression in obese high school girls?
Last, is there any significant effect between body image satisfaction, stress coping style, binge eating and depression in obese high school girls?
The subjects for this study are 450 high school girls in Busan City.
The participants were categorized into three groups : under-weight, normal-weight, and obese group based on the Body Mass Index. Scales employed for this study were Body Esteem Test, Stress Coping Style Checklist, Binge Eating Scale, and Beck Depression Inventory-Korean version. The collected data was analyzed by One-Way ANOVA, Correlation Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis through SPSS WIN 10.0 program.
The conclusions based on the result of this study are summarized as follows:
First, the collected data was analyzed by One-Way ANOVA; obese high school girls were associated with higher body image dissatisfaction, binge eating, and negative attitude of depression than non-obege group.
Second, the collected data was analyzed by Correlation Analysis; there was (1) negative significant effect between body image satisfaction and binge eating, body image satisfaction and depression, stress coping style and depression. : (2) positive significant effect between binge eating and depression.
Last, the collected data was analyzed by Multiple Regression Analysis; binge eating, problem focused coping style, and wishful coping style have significant correlations with depression. Moreover, binge eating was proved to be the most influential factor among three factors.
