동물보은담을 통해서 동물에 대한 공생적 인식과 생태학적 자연관을 포착하고자 쓴 글이다. 동물보은담의 내용은 인간이 위기에 처한 동물을 구해주면, 구원받은 동물이 이를 잊지 않고 어떤 식으로든 반드시 자기를 구해 준 인간에게 도움을 주어 보답한다는 것이다. 인간과 동물 어느 한쪽이 일방적으로 돕거나 도움받는 것이 아니라 서로 대등하게 도움을 주고받는 것이다. 그러므로 인간 중심이거나 동물 중심이 아니라, 인간과 동물이 자연스럽게 공생적 관계를 이루고 있어서 이 논지를 다루는 데 적절한 대상의 설화라 생각하고 생태학적 시각으로 해석하고자 한다. 동물보은담은 인간과 동물이 조화를 이루는 가운데 서로 도움을 주고받는 도덕적 상황을 잘 그려내고 있다. 동물이 은혜 입은 인간에게 반드시 보은한다는 이야기는 널리 알려진 것이지만, 대조적으로 인간은 다른 사람으로부터 은혜를 입어도 반드시 갚지 않을 뿐 아니라, 오히려 앙갚음을 한다는 것이다. 실제 이야기에는 배은망덕한 인간의 이야기가 나타나지 않은 채 동물의 보은 이야기만 해도 이야기꾼들은 이야기 전후에 ‘인간구제는 못해도 짐승구제는 한다’는 논평을 덧붙인다. 그러므로 우리는 전통시대 민중이 동물을 배은망덕한 인간들보다 더 도덕적 존재로 인식하고 동물구제에 적극적이었음을 알 수 있다. 동물보은담의 가장 중요한 특성은 인간이 동물을 공생적인 피조물로 간주하면서 일상생활 속에서 이를 잘 실천했다는 점이다. 그러나 오늘날 인간들은 자연생명을 죽이고, 경제적 논리로 생태학적 법칙을 파괴한다. 이러한 경제논리는 우리의 총체적 삶에 대한 약탈이고 우리를 반생명의 일상생활과 죽음의 문화에 빠져들게 한다. 동물보은담은 시장주의 논리를 경계하고 생태주의 논리에 의해 자연생명을 인간생명 이상으로 존중하는 뜻을 갈무리하고 있다. 결론적으로 동물보은담은 생명문화 속에서 인간과 자연을 대등한 생명으로 인식하고 자연생명의 한 사례로서 동물생명을 구해주고 얻는 보답을 통해서 공생적인 삶의 가치와 함께 인류사회의 지속 가능성을 추구하고 있는 셈이다. 그러므로 인간 중심적인 삶을 버리고 인간과 동물, 인간과 자연이 공생적 관계로 나아가야 한다는 생태학적 논리가 이들 동물 보은담 속에 갈무리된 세계관적 인식의 핵심이라 할 수 있다.
This article intends to remark a symbiotic recognition for animal and ecological view point of nature on the folk-tale of the Animal Returns. Through this discussion we can recognize the interactive relation of the animal and human in animal returns folk-tale. If human, at first, save an animal that faced on crisis, the animal also save a human who faced on crisis. That time, human and animal could be equal status, they help each other. Therefore there is no majority, or minority. The animal returns folk-tale represent well to a moral situation that haman and animal make a harmony and do a interactive saving. It is a wide spread story that animal saved by human returns inevitably, but human who saved another human never return. Therefore we can know that traditional folk recognized animal to equal being more than bad human. The most important specific property of the animal returns folk-tale is that human determines animal to symbiotic creations and practice these view point of world in the culture of the ordinary. But nowadays we kill nature life and destroy the ecological principal in economic logic. This economic logic is stealing our holistic life, and we falling in the ordinary life of anti-life and the culture of death. The animal returns folk-tale make us urge to look out for the logic of market economy and to alive the culture of life. Accordingly the animal returns folk-tale depict and represent our holistic, symbiotic life in order to pursue harmony with nature as the same elements in the world. Conclusionally, in this work I found that the animal returns folk-tale contributed to make us to cognize symbiotic relationship between human and animal, and we have to throw up our human centered relation, make progress to the symbiotic relation.
