이 글에서는 ‘남장 여인의 열행’을 다룬 설화의 특징과 전승양상을 검토하고, 그것이 장르확산을 거치게 되면서 열녀의 이미지가 어떻게 변모되는가를 추적해 보았으며, 남장열녀설화의 장르확산이 조선후기 서사문학사에서 어떤 의의를 지니게 되는가를 짚어보았다. 애초에 구비설화에서 특정 가문과 결부되지 않은 \'민간열녀\'의 형상이 가사 <김부인열행가>에서는 ‘선산 김씨 가문의 열녀’로, 고소설 <곽씨전>에서는 ‘현풍 곽씨 가문의 열녀’로 변모된 사실을 확인하였으며, 고소설 <옥낭자전>에서는 다시 특정 가문과의 연관성이 차단된 채 ‘일반열녀’의 형상을 지닌 것으로 파악되었다. 이처럼 이야기의 중심 내용은 그대로 유지된 채 열녀의 이미지만 변모된 것은 특정인의 의도가 개입되지 않은 구비설화가 장르확산을 거치게 되자 거기에 개별 작가의 특별한 의도가 개입되었기 때문이다. 이런 관점에서 볼 때 남장열녀설화<김부인열행가><곽씨전><옥낭자전>은 각기 독자성을 지닌 개별 작품의 성격을 지닌다기보다 그 모두가 ‘남장 여인의 열행’이라는 소재를 둘러싼 열녀담론의 전개과정에서 파생된 것으로 보아야 할 것이다. ‘남장 여인의 열행’을 둘러싼 문학적 담론은 조선후기 구비문학과 기록문학의 다채로운 교섭양상을 구체적으로 입증해 준다는 점에서도 의의가 크다고 할 수 있다.
This thesis is searching for how the virtuous woman\'s image in folklore transformed in the process of genre spreading and also tries to scrutinize its meaning in the frame of developing process of argument on the virtuous woman. In legend narration, the figure of civic virtuous woman who was not connected with particular family was made known as Sun San The Kims family\'s virtuous woman in Korean verse, ｢Kim\'s wife\'s virtuous song｣. Also it was known as having the figure of common virtuous woman in korean old novel, ｢Oak lady story(옥낭자전)｣, without any connection with particular family. Like this, we can assume that the virtuous woman\'s image was changed, keeping main story\'s contents intact It is because the legend folklore in which the particular meaning wasn\'t interrupted had individual writer\'s particular meaning, having the process of genre spreading. As for this aspect, the virtuous woman\'s legend folklore, The ｢Kim\'s wife\'s virtuous woman song(김부인열행가)｣, ｢Goak story(곽씨전)｣, and ｢Oak girl story(옥낭자전)｣didn\'t have the character of individual work in which had each originality. Otherwise, all of them was derived in the developing process of the virtuous woman\'s discourse connected with special events in the late Chosen dynasty. In spite of these arguments, the material origin of ｢Oak lady story(옥낭자전)｣ which wasn\'t known can be clearly found through this view.
