경상남도 밀양에서 거행되는 아랑제(현 밀양아리랑대축제)는 구전과 야담으로 전해지는 아랑이야기에 근거를 둔 축제로, 아랑을 추모하는 사당인 아랑각에서 치러지는 아랑 제향과 아랑을 소재로 한 각종 공연․전시가 주를 이루는 아랑 축제로 이원화된 방식으로 진행된다. 조선시대 사대부들의 한시에서부터 야담, 구전이야기에 이르기까지 폭넓게 전승되고 있는 아랑이야기는 ‘밀양부사의 딸인 아랑의 실종 - 원귀 아랑의 출현으로 인한 신임 부사의 반복적인 죽음 - 중개자(대리발화자)와 원귀 아랑의 만남 - 원귀 아랑의 발화로 드러나는 폭력 사건의 전말 - 공적 영역에서의 해원(解寃)’의 구조로 서사가 진행된다. 아랑이야기에서 가장 초점이 되는 것은 원귀 아랑의 귀환과, 대리 발화된 원귀 아랑의 말, 그리고 대리자를 내세워 원귀 아랑이 주도하고 있는 공적 애도 과정이다. 원귀 아랑의 귀환 목표는 ‘열녀되기’가 아니라 성적 폭력으로 인한 상실을 남성 주체가 참여한 공적 영역에서 애도하는 것이었다. 원귀가 되어 돌아온 아랑은 대리자 선택에서부터 대리 발화 내용 및 애도 행위 전 과정의 지시에 이르기까지 해원 과정 전체를 주도하며, 여기서 대리자는 원귀 아랑이 상징계로의 진입과 공적 애도를 위해 몸을 빌린 대상에 지나지 않는다. 그러나 아랑제에 소환된 아랑은 ‘정절(貞節)’과 ‘열(烈)’의 이념을 표상하며, 아랑 제향은 성적 폭력에 희생된 아랑에게 ‘말할 수 없음’의 금기를 채웠던 바로 그 가부장적 가치를 여성들에게 교육하고 각인시키는 이데올로기적 기념과 교화의 현장이 되고 있다. 남성 주체에 전유된 아랑이야기와 아랑제의 전승은, 사회적 범주와 경계 설정, 상징계의 승인 등에 의해 배제되거나 소외된 우울증적 주체들의 상실을 위로하지 못한 채 오히려 공적 우울을 가속화하는 기제로 작용하고 있는 것이다. 아랑은 현실과 초현실의 경계를 넘어 현실계로 돌아온 초현실적 존재가 되었고, 남성과 여성의 젠더 경계를 허물며 남성 주체의 입으로 말하는 여성 주체가 되었다. 원귀 아랑은 사회적 경계의 외부를 보여주며 그러한 경계가 만들어내는 모든 공적 우울을 해소하기 위해 귀환하였으며, 공적 애도를 위해 정치적 전략에 따라 남성 주체의 목소리를 전유하였다. 현실에서는 아랑의 상실을 애도할 길이 없다는 점에서, 초현실계의 힘과 남성 주체의 목소리에 의지해서야 공적 애도가 가능해진다는 점에서, 죽음을 통해 비로소 목소리와 말을 얻을 수 있다는 점에서 원귀 아랑의 귀환은 여전히 우울증적 요소를 안고 있다. 바로 이 때문에 아랑 제의, 혹은 아랑 축제는 여전히 지속되는 아랑의 상실과 원귀 아랑의 우울을 해소하는 진정한 애도의 장이 되어야 한다. 원귀 아랑과 그의 대리자가 모두 우울증적 주체였고 그들의 행위가 상징적 질서에 의한 상실을 애도하기 위한 해원 과정이었다면, 오늘날 아랑제는 열녀 아랑을 기념하고 교육하는 정치적 교화와 틀에 박힌 축제에서 벗어나 모든 우울증적 주체들의 상실을 애도하는 진정한 해원굿으로 거듭나야 할 것이다.
