The purpose of this study is to reveal what students perceive on good instruction in higher education, and to suggest the areas for teaching excellence in higher education. In this study 573 students were participated, wrote the essays on good instruction that they had in the university. For the first step of data processing, the data were categorized into sixteen areas.
The data were reviewed for consistency by two researchers. Finally, five areas as characteristics of good instructions were selected from sixteen areas. In describing the results, the students\' opinions were quoted extensively to help analyze the data objectively.
The results showed that the major characteristics of good instruction were various teaching methods, content knowledge, enthusiasm and passion, good relationship, and good evaluation. By these facts, this study suggested five areas for teaching excellence in higher education; pedagogical content knowledge, subject matter content knowledge, professor\'s enthusiasm and
passion, good relationship with student, and various evaluation method and
self evaluation on the instruction.
