교육이 일어나고 있는 학급사태는 다양한 성격과 가치를 지닌 사람들이 모여 특정한 목적을 향해 생각하고 행동하는 한 사회이다. 따라서 복잡할 수밖에 없고 갈등이 존재할 수밖에 없으며 일정한 규칙에 의해 설명되기 어렵다. 이러한 교육사태는 맞고 틀림과 옳고그름이 분명하게 규정될 수 없는 경우가 많기 때문에 혼돈과 딜레마의 연속이 되기도 한다. Spiro와 동료들(1987)이 교육을 “구조화가 어려운 영역(ill-structured domain)”으로 개념화한 것도 이러한 교육의 본질적 속성에 근거하고 있는 것이 아닌가 한다. 이러한 교육의 사태 속에서 교사는 어떤 일을 해야 하는 사람인가? 교사로서의 본분을 보다 유능하게수행하려면 어떤 자질을 필요로 하는가?
As many educators show us, classroom situation is complex, uncertain, and unpredictable dynamics. Therefore the appropriate educational practice cannot be realized simply through implementing standardized teaching strategies and learning principles. It requires teacher\'s own thoughtful decisions resulting from considerate and critical reflections. But, teachers have been staying as consumers rather than producers of educational knowledges which were presented by other specialists. Recently teacher\'s autonomy is regarded as a central factor for the accomplishment of educational reform. This view seems to be closely related to the issues of teacher\'s ability and attitude of reflective thinking This research was aimed to explore the way of developing teacher\'s reflective thinking within the above framework. As a prior discussion, the meaning and the perspectives of reflective thinking was characterized and the previous researches of developing teacher\'s reflective thinking were roughly reviewed. Various methods such as journal writing, group conference, action research, cognitive coaching, structured interviewing, and cooperative communication were found out. Within this research the case method which utilizes educational cases to think and reflect about education and teaching in the university classroom was presented as a possible and significant method of guiding teachers to develop reflective thinking. The prospect of this method does not seem so negative, but the task to concretize this method within each actual situation still remains.
