This study aims to set up standards for speaking achievement test to reduce
Korean elementary school teachers\' burden under the authorized textbook
development system, and further to afford experiential data from the textbooks based
on the 6th curriculum for the next curriculum development. For the purposes, this
study analyzed 16 kinds 64 textbooks for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students of
Korean elementary school.
The analysis was focused on the communicative functions and their exponents
of the 6th curriculum which the textbook writing is based on. The result shows
which communicative function and its exponents in the 6th curriculum were actually
used in most of the textbooks, arranging the example sentences used in more than
nine kinds of textbooks. In addition, the analysis counted sentences which were used
in more than nine kinds of textbooks, but were not listed in the curriculum.
The result of this study may be expected to contribute not only to developing
English speaking achievement tests for Korean elementary school students, but also
to deciding the difficulty level and presentation order of each communicative function
and its example sentences in a series of textbook.
