19세기 후반, 인도 모스렘 사회와 교육의 개혁을 위하여 활동하였던 사이드 칸(Syed Ahmed Khan)은 우선은 당 시대 사회의 지주역할을 하였던 모스렘을 이성적인 입장에 서서 그 참된 모습을 찾으려고 하였다. 그에게 있어서 참된 모스렘은 단순히 종교적인 신앙차원의 문제에 서 끝나는 것이 아니었고, 사회개혁적이고 역사발전적인 추진력이 될 수 있는 정신적 요소를 포함하는 것이었다. 바로 모스렘인들을 그러한 정신으로 무장시키고, 과거의 인습적인 모스렘의 전통에서 해방 시키기 위한 최대의 무기가 바로 교육이라고 그는 보아, 그 실천적인 활동에 종사하였는데 그 표현이 알리가(Aligarh)대학의 설립으로 나타났던 것이다. 그가 참된 모스렘정신을 찾는 활동에는 물론이고, 그의 교육활동에 많은 영향을 끼쳤던 것 은 서구의 문화였는데 특히 기독교의 프로테스탄티즘, 서구의 교육사조 및 그 제도와 19세기 의 혁신주의사상 등이 그 것이었다. 그러나, 그는 철저하고 독실한 모스렘 교도로서 거기에서 일탈하여 서구문화에 함몰된 것 은 아니었다. 서구의 정신, 학문, 교육내용을 수용함에 있어서 그는 모스렘의 전통을 근간으 로 하여 여기에 서구적인 것을 접목시키자는 입장에 서 있었다. 그 역시 힌두측의 람 모휸 로이(Ram Mohun Roy)의 경우와 같이 당대 인도의 사회적인 환경 이나 정신에서 완전히 벗어나서 새로운 사회를 구상, 건설하려는데 까지 나가지는 않았었다. 이러한 데서 그가 구상한 교육이념, 실제적인 교육체제 등은 이원적인 면을 띠우지 않을 수 가 없었고, 또 고등교육을 중시하고 국민기초교육을 경시하는 ‘아래로의 여과이론’을 낳게도 하였다. 그가 편 사회 및 교육활동에서 특히 부각되는 점은 영국에 대한 지나치다 싶을 정도의 충성 심을 나타냈었다는 것이고, 이에 호응한 영국고위식민관리들의 협조와 지원은 그만치 각별한 바 있어 그의 활동은 그만치 순탄한 길을 걸을 수 있었다는 점이다. 이러한 점들은 영국식민정책당국과 힌두, 모스렘과의 관계, 힌두 모스렘사이의 관계를 유 추하여 보는데 매우 의미있는 단서를 제공하여 준다고도 볼 수 있다
The historical activities of Syed Ahmed Khan stand out as an important landmark in the development of the Indian Muslim socio-educational reforms. He achieved for the social and educational betterment of the Muslims of India what Ram Mohun Ray achieved for the moral and intellectual rejuvenation of the Hindus. He started a programme based on the following items : (1) To give a rational interpretation of religion and the holy Scriptures according to the changing circumstances (2) To accept and embrace western education and science without any hesitation, and to establish a new educational institution on the model of the West. His cultural pilgrimage to England acquainted him with western, modern civilization. The religion which was fashioned by Syed Ahmed was that Islam should be explicitly and in fact throughly compatible with social progress. He asserted that education on western lines would be the only means of social reconstruction of the Muslim community in India. In practice, he established a residential college at Aligarh, on the pattern of those of Oxford and Cambridge. But Syed Ahmed was a pious Moslem. He wanted to modernize and at the same time to preserve all that was of value in Moslem, traditional customs and systems. Therefore, he was a reformer and never a revolutionary. Accordingly, dualism(Western and Islamic) existed in his historical activities. Syed Ahmed believed that the old traditional system of education had been shattered to pieces and Indians should establish educational institutions on the English pattern. Appreciating the anciant Indian system of education he said that it was not bad but the old thread with which the ribs had been tied was now broken and a new thread was needed to re-tie them. A new thread was only western education. According to his opinion, a good modern education was supplemented by wise Islamic teaching. We must pay attention to his contemporary standing to bridge the gulf between the English rulers and the Muslims to make the latter loyal subjects and to efface the conviction from the former\'s mind that they were religiously disroyal, The English colonial officials respond to his standing with good will. Accordingly, his educational enterprise resulted in great success. In this context, we are inclined to investigate the English colonial policies to Hindoos, Moslems in 19c India.
