The purpose of the study was to analyze the current Korean primary art textbooks in order to set up the basis for systematic organization of the content structure in art terminologies for developing art textbooks in the 2007 Korean National Art Curriculum and suggesting ways for its optimization.
The findings of this study are as follows: 1) The art contents in the Korean National Art Curriculum(revised in 2007) and primary art textbooks should be developed and presented in accordance with appropriate art terminologies. 2) Art terminologies suggested in the frame for analyzation, which is, ‘art(design) elements’(‘dot’, ‘line’, ‘shape/form’, ‘colour’, ‘volume’, ‘texture’, ‘space’, ‘movement’, etc), ‘art(design) principles’(‘balance’, ‘harmony’, ‘emphasis’, ‘unity’, ‘contrast’, ‘pattern’, ‘rhythm’, etc), ‘art careers’, ‘artistic genre’(‘painting/2D’, ‘sculpture/3D’, ‘design’, ‘architecture’, ‘crafts’, ‘multimedia’, etc), ‘art terms for art appreciation, art history’, ‘aesthetics’, ‘art materials and art tools’, and finally, ‘art methods and techniques(art skills)’, would be changeable for the purpose of the units.
The recommendations for the study were follows: 1) reasonable and reliable standardized test for measuring the abilities of Korean primary students in apprehending art and art terminologies, 2) re-conceptualization of what the abilities in understanding of art terminologies, and the last, consistent researches should be carried on and supported.
