The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of the group art therapy program using
reminiscence techniques on the cognitive functions, depression and self-expression of elderly people with
dementia. In order to achieve the above research purpose, 14 elderly people with dementia in nursing
hospital were divided into a 7-person experimental group and a 7-person control group. The group art
therapy program was performed for 120 minutes. once a week over 14 sessions in total. In order to analyze
the effect of the program, the following indexes were used: K-MMSE, GDS-K, LMT, art-self-expression,
communication and self-expression. The Wilcoxon signed-ranks test was performed for the before- and
after-therapy scores. The results were as follows. First, there was significant difference in the mean of
cognitive functions of elderly people with dementia between the pretest and the posttest. Second, in the
case of the index of depression, the posttest score was significantly lower than the pretest score. Third,
there was a statistically significant difference in the mean of LMT, Art-self-expression, communicationself-
expression between the pretest and posttest. Accordingly, Accordingly, it can be concluded that the
group art therapy had effects on the cognitive functions, depression and self-expression of elderly people
with dementia.
