In career decision process, we investigated the experiences of happenstance of the coaches and counselors
who experienced career transitions. Ten coaches and counselors over late thirties who have changed their
career at least twice were interviewed. The interview data were analyzed based on Consensual Qualitative
Research (CRQ) Method. The results indicated that happenstance significantly influenced on their career
decision making process and current career position. The participants reported that they utilized
happenstance events as an opportunity in career decision making process. In addition, the participants
reported they had many barriers in the career decision making process, but they could overcome those
barriers with positive attitudes, social supports and personal efforts. The participants are satisfied with their
current career position, which has been achieved throughout the career transitions. In case, if they have
another opportunity in their career development, the participants reported that they would continue to take
new choices or change their career path. Finally, the participants suggested some lessons gained from
insights on happenstance experiences in career decision making process. The results showed the importance
of finding the happenstance experiences as an opportunity in career decision making process. This study
also provided useful implications to career counseling and developing of career programs in the future.
