The purpose of this study is to research Taoism in the taoist figure paintings
and implicate Taoism for art education. Considering the contemporary cultural
context, the multi-dimensional study on the various meanings of the traditional
idea are very essential for contemporary application. This study attempts to bring
and increase attention on the fact that in traditional ideas and art, there is more
emphasis that had been placed on the various stories in the taoist figure paintings.
This study examines the application to the idea of transcendency of
traditional taoist figure paintings; focusing on the various stories in taoist figure
paintings of Kim, Hongdoo and Shim, Sajung. Through the taoist figure paintings
of Kim, Hongdoo, this study can suggest the transcendency of death, time and
limit of humans. Sim Sajung was a famous artist of the taoist figure paintings,
and through this observation of this artist, the transcendency of space is apparent.
Through this study of the idea of transcendency shown in Taoism I expect
to expand an understanding of traditional idea and bring diverse changes to
traditional art. This research has the implications for traditional art education that
broaden our understanding of the taoist figure paintings which is included in the
idea of Taoism by revising its ideological and aesthetic significances in traditional
art.
