SNSs(Social Network Site service) have been changing human communication, relationships and the lifestyle of societies. This study sought to develop design principles for the educational use of SNSs through use of studies which previously investigated the reasons people use SNSs and the motivation for users’ participation. The results of many previous studies showed that the reasons for participation in SNS sites include the following factors: information search, entertainment, communication, social connection, information sharing, self-esteem, social or emotional support, self expression, pursuing identity, and the construction of relationships. Based on these factors, this study suggested creating a networked learning as a learning model. This study also proposed several learning principles for networked learning, such as expansion and diversification of communication, long-tail approach for educational demand, collective intelligence, integration of emotion and cognition, and personal learning environments. These principles were distinguished from other former more traditional educational approaches. This new research pursued and valued autonomy over controlled classroom environments, and valued informal education over formal education. The networked learning model also moved from classroom-centered activities to activities beyond the classroom and distanced itself from singular instructional materials to plural instructional materials, from individual activities to collaborative learning activities, from acceptance to participation, from teacher-centered communication to a diversification of communication. Moreover, the networked learning model allows the down play of exclusively cognition-centered approaches and allows the student to integrate emotion and cognition, and move from learning in a disconnected way to learning through networks between people. If these environmental changes are given to students in their learning situation through SNSs, students can become more enthusiastic and active learners. Changes in the learning environment also allow students to integrate their knowledge into social situations, making the lesson more effective.
