본 연구의 목적은 청소년의 초기 단계에 해당하는 초등학교 4학년 학생들이 중학교 1학년이 되기까지의 우울 변화에 따라 구분되는 집단(잠재계층)의 수와 그 형태를 알아보고, 각 잠재계층 형성과 성별, 부모와의 관계, 또래와의 관계, 교사와의 관계의 관련성을 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위하여 한국청소년패널조사의 초등학교 4학년 패널 1, 2, 3, 4차년도 종단자료에 Nagin(1999)의 준모수적 집단 중심접근(semi-parametric group-based approach)을 적용하였다. 분석 결과 변화 형태에 따라 4개의 잠재계층이 도출되었고, 그 형태에 따라 저수준 유지 집단, 증가 집단, 중간수준 집단, 고수준 집단으로 명명하였다. 다항 로짓분석을 통해 영향요인을 검증한 결과 성별, 부모와의 관계, 또래와의 관계, 교사와의 관계 모두 잠재계층을 결정하는 데 유의미한 변수로 나타났다. 본 연구는 초기 청소년의 우울의 변화에 영향을 줄 수 있는 변수들을 바탕으로 잠재계층을 예측하여 우울로 인해 이후 청소년기와 성인기의 문제행동으로 이어질 가능성이 있는 청소년들을 위한 적절한 대비책을 찾는 데 도움을 줄것이다. 또한 변화의 형태에 따라 잠재계층을 도출하고 그 잠재계층을 결정짓는데 독립변수의 효과들을 검증하는 종단연구 방법은 아직 널리 이용되고 있지 않다는 점에서 연구 방법론적 측면에서도 의의가 있다.
The purposes of the present study were to identify the subgroups (i.e., latent classes) depending on early adolescents' change patterns in emotional depression and to test the effects of gender and relationship variables on determining the latent classes. For these goals, we applied Nagin's(1999) semi-parametric group-based approach to the Korean Youth Panel Survey. Results showed that four latent classes were identified, which could be defined based on the patterns as low-level maintaining group, increasing group, intermediate-level group, and high-level group. By adding gender, relationship with the parents, the peers and the teacher to the unconditional latent class model, we tested the effects of the variables on the latent classes. Multinomial logit analysis showed that gender, relationship with the parents, the peers and the teacher were significant determinants of the latent classes. Findings from this study suggest the need to consider heterogeneity in the study of early adolescents' emotional depression to facilitate more refined targeting of intervention program.
