The purpose of this study is to provide basic data needed for enhancing efficient teaching competency by investigating the importance of teaching competency perceived by physical education teachers and their performance level. The conclusion as a result of analysis is as follows: First, physical education teachers shows a lower performance level compared to their perception level of importance in terms of teaching competency. The performance level is also
lower than the perception level of importance in terms of five detailed teaching competencies. Second, there is a close correlation between perception of importance and the performance level of teaching competency. A statistically significant correlation is also found in five detailed teaching competencies. Third, perception of importance that has influence upon physical education teachers' performance of teaching competency is goal setting, teaching/learning planning, analysis of physical education teaching/learning curriculum and contents of evaluation. In conclusion, physical education teachers shows high levels both in perception of importance and performance of teaching competency, but their performance level is lower than their perception. level of importance Since their perception level of importance has influence upon their performance level, it is very important not only to create an
appropriate internal and external environment but also to improve their perception level in order to accomplish the goals of physical education. And it is also required to make efforts to improve educational conditions, to analyze and solve hindering problems against performance of teaching competency, in order to realize efficient physical education teaching/learning.
