해외봉사활동은 사회·문화교류의 한 형태로서 기능한다. 하지만 우리사회 속에 서 원조의 형태로 왜곡·이해되고 있다. 이 연구에서는 해외 봉사활동 참여 대학 생들의 경험을 이해하고, 이 경험이 참여자들의 삶에 어떠한 의미를 지니는지에 대해 논의하고 있다. 이러한 문제의식에 답하기 위해 문화기술적 사례연구방법을 선택했다. 이를 위해 자료는 면담, 관찰, 일지, 연구노트, 선행연구 검토, 해외봉사 활동 결과물 등을 수집했다. 수집된 자료는 영역분석과 분류분석을 통해 참여자 들의 해외봉사활동 경험과 그 의미에 대해 분석했다. 연구결과 참여자들은 봉사 활동 참여에 대한 ‘설레임’과 ‘두려움’을 경험하고 있었다. 낯선 언어, 문화, 환경, 관계에 대한 ‘막연함’과 관점차이에 대한 ‘두려움’이었다. 준비과정은 ‘관계적 갈등’의 연속이었다. 살아온 삶의 방식차이는 봉사활동에 대한 관점의 차이었다. 이는 봉사교육의 부재로부터 대부분 비롯되었다. 봉사활동 실행단계에 서는 사회·문화적 소통을 경험했다. 이는 다른 문화, 언어권에 대한 이해인 동시 에 자신을 돌아보는 성찰의 계기였다. 이는 ‘봉사의 의미 확장’, ‘공동체에 대 한 이해와 실천’, ‘성찰적 삶’의 결과로 다가왔다. 이상의 연구결과를 토대로 다음과 같은 제언을 했다. 첫째, 봉사활동에서 발생하는 갈등의 이해 필요성, 둘 째, ‘원조’가 아닌 ‘교류’로서 봉사활동 사전교육의 필요성, 셋째, 사전 준비 와 봉사활동 주제의 명료화의 필요성이다.
The purpose of this study is to understand the experience of college students in a volunteer abroad program and explore the influence of the volunteering experience on their lives. For this study purpose, college students participating the volunteer abroad program in Adygeya were selected as the informants of the study and the ethnographic case study using various media (e.g., interview, diary, and research note) was applied. The collected data were categorized based on their volunteer experiences and the meanings of the experiences. In general, college student volunteers initially felt the sense of ‘expectation’ and ‘anxiety’. The preparing period was ‘full of relational conflicts’ because the volunteers has different backgrounds. In the period of volunteering in Adygeya, they experienced ‘social and cultural communication’ with other volunteers and volunteering recipients, led to the opportunities to understand other cultures and to introspect about themselves. These experiences became the foundation in ‘extension of meaning about volunteering’, ‘practical understanding of community’ and ‘life of introspection’. For the successful and meaning volunteer experiences of college students, it is necessary to help them understand the various conflicts and educate them for volunteering as a social and cultural exchange program and various needs and difficulties during the volunteering period.
