Although scoliosis is a disease that can happen to anybody, adolescents' spines need more attention because they
are limber and easy to be transformed. So recently the medical world presents in many ways the necessity of
right posture and adequate exercise for prevention and treatment of adolescents' scoliosis. And Yoga is widely
used as one of the ways. In this respect, this study is designed to find out how yoga Therapy program
influences the changes of middle school students' skeletons and muscles and to help them keep right posture
and prevent scoliosis by themselves. The program in this study was focused on Vini Yoga for Scoliosis and was
redesigned according to the situations. We examined Cobb's Angle and Scoliosis angle to check the change of
scoliosis skeleton and muscle structure, and also examined the change of function according to increase or
decrease in pain by VAS and ODI. We used 7 items of Body Awareness Measure among Kentucky Inventory
of Mindfulness Skills(KIMS) to find out the increase of Body Awareness. The subjects in this study were ‘K’
middle school students in ‘S’ city, who were diagnosed as having scoliosis of 10°~15° Cobb's Angle through
X-ray examination. They had been chosen among the students with scoliosis of 5° by scoliometer in that
middle school, in March of 2014. This study was conducted with two groups. One of them was experimental
group(yoga therapy group) of 11 students who wanted to participate in this study, and the other was a
comparison group(controlled group) of 10 students who did not want to, two times a week, 50 minutes each
time, in all 16 times for 8 weeks. Finally we analyzed the data of 9 students from each group who participated
more than 12 times. Data processing was done by Analysis of Covariance(ANCOVA) through SPSS statistics
program. The scoliosis angle and body awarness are statistically significant, whereas those of Cobb's Angle, VAS,
ODI are not. From the above results we found out that Yoga Therapy Program has a positive influence on
decreasing Scoliosis angle and growing body awareness. These results suggest that henceforth Yoga Therapy
Program might be helpful for the prevention and the treatment of scoliosis.
