베트남은 다민족으로 구성되어 있는 국가이며, 1979년 베트남 정부에 의해 54개의 민족분류가 공식화되었다. 베트남 전체의 인구의 88%를 차지하는 비엣족(낀족)에 비해, 나머지 53개의 소수민족들은 사회적, 경제적으로 차별과 견제를 받아왔다. 베트남 정부의 공식적인 정책의 기조에 따르면, 54개 민족은 한 가족과 같아서, 다양한 문화가 서로 어우러지며 조화를 이루는 가운데 베트남의 국가 정체성을 형성하고 있다. 본고에서 살펴보는 베트남 민족학 박물관에서 보이는 54개 민족에 대한 전시 역시 이러한 담론에서 벗어나지 않으며 각 민족의 문화, 역사, 전통의 특징이 외연상 대등한 형태로 관람객에게 제시되고 있다. 하지만 이러한 박물관에서의 전시를 통한 재현은 베트남 소수민족들이 경제적, 정치적으로 겪어온 역사적 경험과 현재 처해있는 열악한 상황에 대한 맥락적 고려가 부재하다는 문제점이 있다. 또한 자의와 타의로 여러 차원의 변화를 겪고 있는 소수민족들을 전통의 보호라는 명목 하에 박제화된 형태로 통제하는 측면이 강하다는 점에서 진정한 다문화의 존중이라고 보기도 어렵다.
Vietnam is a country that consists of multiple ethnicities. In 1979, the Vietnamese government officialized that it had fifty-four ethnic groups within its territorial boundary. The majority is the Viet (Kihn) ethnicity which accounts for approximately eighty-eight percentage of the entire population of Vietnam, while the other fifty-three groups are considered as ethnic minorities of Vietnam. Fifty-three ethnic minorities have faced discrimination economically and socially. The official policy of the Vietnamese government is based on a discourse that all fifty-four ethnic groups of Vietnam form a family, with respective cultures of each group exist in harmony based on which the Vietnamese identity is established. Exhibits at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (VME) in Hanoi is based on this dominant discourse, portraying the ethnic groups as having equally distinct cultures and traditions of their own. However, the exhibits and the representation of ethnic minorities at the VME obscure their painful history of oppression and current dire circumstances of economic disadvantages and social discriminations.
