This paper examines with topics related with traditional celestial charts in Korea and western ones introduced in the late Joseon period. In 1913, Carl Rufus working in Korea as a scientist missionary had claimed that the Cheonsang-yeolcha-bunya-ji-do (the celestial chart of King Yi Taejo) was carved according to its old form of late 7th century Goguryeo. However, the careful examination of the twelve zodiac signs carved in the outmost region of the chart provides that it was modeled a chart copied in the late Goryeo period instead of Goguryeo period. The single circular star chart, which is typically seen in the Cheonsang-yeolcha-bunya-ji-do, was a long lasting Korean style in Joseon period. Since the Hwangdo-nambuk-chongseong-do (The Star Map in the Southern and Nothern Hemispheres on the Ecliptic) was introduced into Korea in the early 18th century, a mixed form of Western and Korean start chart was made combining this with the traditional single circular star chart of Cheonsang-yeolcha-bunya-ji-do. The Star Map in the Southern and Nothern Hemispheres on the Ecliptic became to be the most reliable western star chart in the 19th century and it was inherited to Choi Han-gi’s star chart printed in 1834.
