This study aimed to find out the effects of group art therapy on empathy and social self-concept of shelter children. Subjects of this study are upper grade elementary students (4th~6th) living in B children shelter located in A city, who take after school classes. Twelve students who have lower learning ability were recommended by their teachers and randomly assigned to experimental and control group, each consisting of six students. The group art therapy program was conducted over 14 sessions excluding the pre- and follow-up sessions, and each session was done once a week, for 70 minutes. Measurements of empathy and social self-concept, and kinetic house-tree-person (K-HTP) drawing tests were used as tools for data collection. Data analysis was done by non-parametric testing method using SPSS 21.0 program. Results from this study are as follows. First, group art therapy had positive effect in enhancing empathy of shelter children. Second, group art therapy showed positive effect in enhancing social self-concept of shelter children Third, group art therapy had positive effect on quantitative analysis of K-HTP drawing test. By these results, group art therapy for shelter children had positive effects on improving their empathy and social self-concept.
