This paper aims to consider the reason that the modern people still feel loneliness, a sense of emptiness and anxiety, even though they have established the networks to be happy, and to find the way to solve the psychological problems from a viewpoint of Buddhist psychology. Observing their daily lives of the modern man, we may find that they habitually live without recognizing that they are relying on the device like smartphone. I think that the psychological problems of human beings are caused by a lack of self awareness of these situations and that we can find ways to overcome them in Buddhist practices. This discussion first began with a review of how the concept of ‘sati,’ which means ‘memory,’ could be interpreted as ‘mindfulness.’ Based on this, I discussed that in order to coexist with others in a network society, it is necessary to have an ‘independent’ sympathy and that we can find the way in the four immeasurable minds[四無量心]. Modern people have become to live in a network society. It is a Buddhist message that what they need is not the extreme life that completely rejects a civilization or depends on a machine but the self conscious life by the middle way.
