The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of single-session music therapy intervention on pain, anxiety and depression of the gynecologic cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Subjects were 75 gynecologic cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in gynecology clinics of S hospital in Seoul. They were randomly assigned into the two groups: the experimental group(n=38) and the control group(n=37). The data collected from 67 subjects (32 from the experimental group and 35 from the control group) were analyzed and 8 subjects who were away or did not participate in post-test were excluded. This study consisted of pre-test, intervention, chemotherapy, and post-test. The experimental group participated in single-session music therapy program, while the control group did not participated. The single-session music therapy program consisted of various musical activities such as singing, songwriting, improvisation, playing, and music listening. Independent t-tests were employed to compare the scores of the two groups. Results showed significant differences in the scores of pain, anxiety, and depression between the two groups(p<.05). It is implied that the single-session music therapy can be useful as intervention to decrease pain, anxiety, and depression of gynecologic cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
