청각학(audiology)에 대한 기원은 정확히 알려진 바가 없으나 미국에서는 세계 2차 대전 중 전쟁 무기의 고소음의 피폭에 의해 난청과 이명 등으로 고통받는 청각손실자들에게 보청기 처방, 독순법, 청능재활, 언어치료 및 상담 등의 서비스를 제공하기 위한 미군 청각재활센터에서 Hearing science, 이과학(otology), 언어병리학(speech pathology)등의 접목으로 탄생하였다.6)7) 일반적으로 통용되는 청각학(audiology)을 Mendel은“정상과 비정상의 청능을 과학적인 분야와 임상적인 분야에서 모두 연구하는 학문”이라고 보고하였다.8) 이러한 청각학(audiology)의 어원을 살펴보면 audio(듣다)와 -logy(학문, 론)의 합성어로 1939년에 audiology, audiologist, audiological이란 단어가 처 음 생성되었고, 1940년에 뉴스에서 쓰이기 시작했으며, 1945년 이후에 대중적으로 쓰이기 시작했다. Audiology라는 신생어가 누구에 의해서 만들어졌는지는 확실치 않지만 현재는 청각 및 청력손실, 평형기능과 관련된 전문분야를 대표하는 대중적인 용어이다. 세계 제2차 대전 중 청각손실자들은 미군 재활센터에서의 청력손실에 대한 재활서비스에 만족하였고 청각학의 효과는 상당히 성공적이었다. 그러한 결과가 전쟁 후에는 시민들을 위한 유사한 청각재활센터를 발생하게 하였고 이후 미국 내에서는 청각학이 기존의 hearing science나 이과학 외에도 언어병리학, 소아과학, 노년학, 정신과학, 신경과학, 특수교육학, 심리학, 음향학, 전자공학 등 여러 학문 분야의 복합성을 발판으로 독립적이고 전문적인 학문으로 발전하였다.1)7)9) 본 논문에서는 미국청각학회(American Academy of Audiology, AAA)의 탄생, 국가공인의 청각전문가 자격인증제, 청각학관련 최신 연구동향을 소개함으로써 미국의 청각학이 독특하고 타학문과 유기적이며 인류복지 증진에 기여하는 유용한 학문이고 전망이 있는 전문인을 배양하는 산실이 되기까지의 발전과정을 살펴보고자 한다.
In the United States, audiology had its origins in the military rehabilitative services during and immediately after World War II. From the beginning to now days, audiology had remarkably improved in auditory rehabilitation skills, hearing tests as well as hearing assistive instruments which can be helpful to the hearing impaired. Without dedicated and enthusiastic audiologists, the achievements could not be accomplished. In concerned with the general health care service field development, audiology has continued to expand and, enrich the technical area such as cochlear implant (CI), auditory brainstem implant (ABI), neuroplasticity, central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), hair cell regeneration, mismatch negativity (MMN), stacked-ABR, cochlear hydrops analysis masking procedure (CHAMPS), vestibular-evoked-myogenic potentials (VEMP) and tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT). The purpose of this paper was to introduce not only the origin of audiology but also the national certification system for audiologists, research trends of audiology in the United States.
