2010년 한국 디지털 생태계의 화두는 ‘아이폰’과 ‘트위터’이다. 아이폰이 디지털 컨버전스(Digital Convergence)를 상징하는 스마트폰의 선두주자라면, 트위터는 사용자 간 네트워크 형성 및 커뮤니케이션 기능을 주 내용으로 하는 소셜 네트워크 서비스(Social Network Service, SNS)의 대명사이다. 아이폰과 트위터로 대표되는 한국형 디지털 생태계의 변화는 아주 짧은 시간에 기존의 커뮤니케이션 도구와 네트워크 서비스를 대체하면서 놀랄 만한 성장세를 보여주고 있다.1) 이러한 성장세는 단순한 사용자의 증가를 넘어 매체로서의 영향력과 파급력을 수반하고 있는데다, 그동안 국내에서는 상대적으로 약세였던 스마트폰과 SNS가 아이폰과 트위터로 인해 디지털 문화의 주류로 편입해 들어왔다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 세계적인 휴대폰 제조업체이면서도 스마트폰 개발에 소극적이었던 삼성과 LG는 아이폰의 엄청난 성공에 자극받아 경쟁적으로 스마트폰을 출시하고 있고, 트위터는 언론의 우호적인 지원 사격을 받아 이상적인 SNS의 모델로 연일 부각되고 있다.2) 아이폰이 갖고 있는 디지털 기기로서의 경쟁력을 감안해 보면 작금의 선풍적인 인기는 충분히 이해할 수 있다. 오히려 그동안 일부 기업의 이해관계와 실정법 적용 문제로 국내 출시가 미루어져 온 것이 안타까울 만큼 아이폰은 디지털 생태계를 송두리째 변화시키기에 충분한, 가히 혁명적이고 매력적인 도구이다.
