If we go by the numbers of people who have participated in S.N. Goenka’s 10-day introductory Vipassana Meditation course, then we can say that it is the most widespread, most widely practiced Buddhist meditation technique today, as more than 2 million people world wide, have participated in Goenka’s 10-day Vipassana course. In email correspondence with the Vipassana Research Institute, Igatpuri India. Goenka, in his 10-day course teaches a progressive, body-based meditation technique which culminates, by the 8th day of the course, in the practice of the ‘body scan,’ also known as ‘body sweeping’ the swift, mindful scanning of the whole body from head to toe and toe to head in a contiguous way. In this article I will give an introductory examination of the scriptural basis of the body scan.
