Dance has such an intricate relationship with its culture that neither can survive at the expense of the other. Even in our days African tribes have managed to keep their traditional culture and heritage untarnished by the wave of civilization. In the primitive form of dances the individual alone counts for little, it is the group as a whole that gives meaning to its gestures. Dance does not only vigor the spirit of the society but also enhances the social cohesion by giving a meaning to the social structure. The interaction and migration among various tribes throughout the history gave birth to a pool of cultural diversity. Traditional rituals, performances and tribal knowledge were handed down to one generation to the next. African dance is more that a set of movements. Dance represents an essential part of the way Africans coped with their everyday lives. Our contemporaries have gradually become interested in the instinctive and primitive impulse of the African dance. The purpose of this research is to re-enlighten the theoretical background of the African culture and retrieve common factors of African dance in order to understand and study the African dance from a cultural approach. The diversity of the African dance can be the breakthrough to approach other civilizations that are still oppressed and replenish the hollowness left by the modern civilization. As an era of glottalization, it is a good opportunity to unveil and understand the mystery of the traditional African culture and dance, to endeavor to preserve the traditions and customs of the African continent. Its culture and history need to be re-evaluated as an equal to the western culture and not as a subject of comparison for poverty or underdevelopment. Africans tried to give life to their gestures to obtain what man has always wanted, that is defiance to the law of gravity, attain a state of spiritual purity; in other words, a profound and earnest need to reach out for some kind of deity.
