The present study was carried out to analyze the effects of group art therapy on reducing the depression of children in Childcare Facilities.
For this purpose, the author selected a sample groups consisting of third-and fourth-grade elementary school children from Childcare Facilities and examined the effects of a group art therapy program on reducing depression by applying the program and measured depression before and after the application of the program.
The subjects of the research were third- and fourth-grade elementary school students from Childcare Facilities in Incheon, of whom 15 children from 'A' Childcare Facilities formed the experimental group.
In order to measure children's depression, Children's Depression Inventory(CDI) was used. The program was applied to the experiment group 2~3 times and 90 minutes a week and a total of 33 sessions. Results were compared based on the score of a pre-test and a post-test.
The results of the experiment and the analysis are as follows;
First, group art therapy significantly reduced the score of depressive emotion in children from childcare Facilities after the application of the program. Second, the degree of behavioral disorder was significantly reduced in children from childcare Facilities after the application of the program. Third, group art therapy made children from childcare Facilities have interest around the environment. Fourth, self-abasement was improved positively in children from Childcare Facilities after the application of the program. Fifth, the degree of physiological symptoms were greatly reduced in children from Childcare Facilities too.
Putting together the results of this study as presented above, group art therapy was very effective to the experimental group children from childcare Facilities on reducing the depression and sub categories of the depression.
