The purpose of this study was to prove the effect of art therapy program based on theraplay in a
multi-cultural family between a mother and child. Within the multi-cultural family, the child developed a socio affective profile, whereby the child could not get along with other children nor follow the teacher’s instruction in the class room. The art therapy program is based on theraplay which involve four aspects of interaction (structure, engagement, challenge, nurture). The program consists of 50-60 minutes weekly, and a total of 10 sessions were conducted between a mother and child. The therapist introduced games of interaction to the mother at the end of each session of art therapy. In addition, to verify the effect of the program, a mother-child relationship test was conducted on the mother and the child’s socio affective
profile development test was conducted by the child’s teacher before and after the program. The result, the child’s social and emotional development of societal competence improved, scores of anxiety, anger, and aggression decreased, score of conflict and dependence between a mother and child decreased, and the score of intimacy improved. As a result, the case study of mother-child art therapy based on theraplay proved that art therapy provided a favorable influence to the child’s social affective profile.
