\"The purpose of this research is to find out whether the characteristic expressions vary by students\' grades. The present standards of characteristic expressions include worksheet composition, method of using basic materials like photos, and harmony in drawing. The subjects are 587 normal elementary students who range from the first graders to the sixth. After the students carried out collage technique test, I checked 12 items created for this formal analysis, and presented the characteristic expressions in accordance with their grades
The results of this research are as follows. Firstly, when it comes to the composition of the collage, all the subjects showed little variation in some items. They usually preferred to use more than 7 pieces of pictures. Also they liked to use most space in their drawing paper, but did not use the other side of it. One third of the subjects pasted photo pieces to overlap with each other or to extrude from the paper. In particular, the first and the second graders showed relatively higher rate of using the overlapping technique than the others.
Secondly, in all grades, most students preferred to cut pictures into indefinite or complex pieces. Comparatively the subjects from the third graders up to senior students showed remarkable increase in using the photo-compounding technique. Also, the subjects showed their preference in making familiar letters and shapes. The older the students are, the more frequently they use meaningful letters.
Thirdly, almost all the elementary students preferred color photos over black-and-white ones. The fact that many students used more than 3~6 colors would indicate their tendency toward color application. More than a half of all the subjects showed well-distributed space composition in their drawings. And the works of more than two-thirds students were balanced. Two-thirds of them use the drawing paper horizontally.
It can be suggested that the results of this research are helpful in systemizing formally characteristics of collage expression and in avoiding the errors that may occur in a children\'s psychological diagnosis through collage.
