1875년 파리 대학에서 신경학적 결함을 가진 환자에게 승마치료에 대한 연구가 처음으로 소개되었다 치료적 승마운동은 1950년대에 이미 소아마비 아동에게 사용되었으며, 최근에는 뇌성마비 아동의 자세조절과 기능증진을 위한 치료에 적용이 확대되고 있는 실정이다(Liptak, 2005)
