This paper examines the relationship of patriotism and social capital. For this aim, this study analyzes how social capital including trust and participation affects national pride which is recognized as the active expression of patriotism. About 5,000 surveys are used for data in Korea,China,and Japan. This research finds following results. ① All kind of trust positively affect national pride, but the impact of public trust is greater than the private trust. ② Public
trust's impact mainly appears in the sphere of political institutions. ③ Group participation's impact on the national pride differs by country. In Japan, vertical group participation positively affects national pride. In China, horizontal group participation positively affects on national pride. However, Korea's participation in the horizontal group negatively affects national pride. ④ Impact of political participation on the national pride differs by country. Unlike China and Japan, Korean's political participation negatively affects national pride ⑤ Impact of Personal characteristics on national pride also differs by country. In Korea, older people have high national pride. But China is that younger people and educated people have high national pride. ⑥ Social capital than personal characteristics has a greater impact on national pride. Based upon such results, this research discusses how to raise up national pride through the increase of social capital.
