Brief History of 4.19 Revolution
The presidential election of 1960 had gained much attention all over the country because there was a possibility of transition of power. Rhee Syngman, the president who ran for his 4th consecutive term, and Cho Pyong-ok, presidential candidate from Min Ju Dang, competed for the office. For the election of vice president, vice president Yi Ki-bung form Ja Yu Dang and Chang Myon from Min Ju Dang ran for the office. Merely a few weeks prior to presidential
election, presidential candidate Cho Pyong-ok died suddenly. And his running mate, Chang Myon, continued his election campaign. On February 28, the first large-scale voluntary demonstration against government authority since the establishment of the Korean government took place in the city of Taegu during Chang Myon\'s political rally. Several hundred students from Kyongbuk high school and three other high schools demonstrated in front of provincial
government office and collided with police. The rally was suppressed violently by police. And the incident drew a lot of attention nationwide. On the election day, the 15th of March, Presidential candidate Rhee and his running mate Yi Ki-bung won the election and were announced to be the next president and vice-president. However, many cases of undelivered voting slips were reported in southern part of Masan. Also, newspapers reported many violations of election officials, which include cases of stolen, switched, destroyed ballot boxes. As the result, Min Ju Dang members in Masan accused the election fraudulent and denounced the election.
After 419 revolution, 516 military government, that seized power through coup de tat on May 16, intentionally degraded 419 revolution as righteous uprising for reasons of not having will to the
power and a new power structure. 419 Sa-Rang-Bang-Hwe, the organization of 419 participants, who tried to restore the meaning of 419 as revolution, was forced to disband on the October of the year 1972 by the military dictator. After 34 years of military dictatorship, people\'s government re-defined 419 as \"revolution\" and approved the spirit of 419 revolution, which is liberty, democracy and justice, as the constitutional ideology of our country along with the spirit of 31 uprising. As the result, 419 cemetery became a national cemetery. Also, the members of the press reported the resurrection of the 419 participants\' organization on April 14 1995. With our belief that the whole truth about the history of Ju Yok will be justified in the future, in order to inherit our pride as well as the historic truth to our successors, we move forward to publish and distribute \"The history of 419 revolution\".
