본 연구는 시각장애인의 점자도서 보급이나 점자교육 기관의 인적, 물적 인프라 구축 또는 점자 관련 기자재의 수요 파악 등에 필요한 신뢰할 수 있는 자료를 제공하기 위하여 시각장애인의 점자해득 정도와 점자 활용실태 조사를 실시하게 되었다. 시각장애학교 학생 1,069명과 시각장애복지관 이용자 718명을 통계자료 대상으로 하였으며, 설문지를 통하여 점자해득 여부와 점자 활용실태를 알아보았다. 연구 결과를 통해 얻어진 결론은 시각장애학생의 점자해득률은 48.0%정도이며, 점자해득 시기는 유치원 때가 가장 많았다, 점자를 해득하는데 가장 큰 영향을 미친 사람은 초등학교 교사가 가장 많았으며, 한 달에 한권 이상 독서를 하는 학생이 68.8%정도이다. 시각장애인복지관을 이용하는 시각장애인의 점자해득률은 45.0%정도이며, 시각장애학교를 졸업한 수보다 일반학교를 졸업한 수가 더 많았다. 한 달에 한 권 이상 독서를 하는 시각장애인은 33.0%정도이다.
This study conducted research on braille understanding level and braille application condition of visually impaired people in order to provide reliable data required for supply of braille books for visually impaired people, establishment of human and material infra of braille educational institution, and understanding demands of tools and materials related with braille. 1,069 students of visual impairment school and 718 users of community welfare center for visually impaired people were the target of statistical data, and braille literacy status and braille application condition were inquired through survey. As a result of the research, braille literacy of visually impaired students was about 48.0 and time of learning braille was mostly in preschool. The person who has the most influence on understanding braille was elementary school teacher, and students who read more than one book a month were about 68.8. Braille literacy of visually impaired people using the welfare center for visually impaired people was about 45.0 and more people have graduated from regular school than visual impairment school. Visually impaired people who read more than one book a month were about 33.0.
