Today, as leisure time increases, there is a growing appetite for culture as well as a
growing desire for cultural reproduction. In this social background, the museum is faced
with social needs that it should concentrate on development of educational activities‘ new
roles and many programs, based on the cultural learning and experience. The exhibition of
artifacts is the way of revealing the historical significance and aesthetic sense and education
is the process of explaining its historical context as current meaning. In this sense, the
development of educational programs reflecting nature of the artifacts those are in each
museum is an important approach to describe the unique context of the region. Therefore,
the role of educator is presented in another dimension which is unprecedented.
In this context, the goal of this research is to suggest how to develop and use
educational programs focused on each museum‘s collections using the process of
developing educational programs of Gwangju National Museum as examples. To do this,
we described museum‘s educational functions and reconstructed the development of its
educational programs. Based on this environment we got to know Gwangju National
Museum‘s surroundings of exhibition and programs. At the same time, we explained the
development process of ‘light of thousand years-Lacquerware‘ as example. In
conclusion, by applying a variety of approaching methods about museum education we
could suggest a possibility of differentiated educational programs for each museum.
