The purpose of this research is to investigate the following issues: (1) What is the present condition of
youth internet addiction counseling in today's major counseling field like?, (2) What professional
interventions are needed to improve it? and (3) For this research, the primary survey was conducted with
34 counselors in nationwide youth institutions. Another survey was filled out by 45 subjects who
completed internet addiction counseling specialists course given by Korea Youth Counseling Institute.
Additionally, seven counselors who had participated in the primary survey were chosen and interviewed.
The opinions of those counselors on the counseling intervention for internet addiction clients were
analyzed to inform the demand in practice. The results were as follows: The counselors mostly evaluated
high in the seriousness of game addiction, among the various kind of internet addiction. Difficulties in
interpersonal relationship and academic achievement were considered the primary factors that contribute to
the seriousness of internet addiction. In internet addiction counseling, the involuntariness of clients was
found to be the most serious barrier in treating them. To overcome this issue, for counselors is strongly
recommended. In terms of education for counselors, the need of supportive education to utilize effective
counseling techniques and manpower of specialists was found. Also, the high demand of family-involved
program was found. This research provided useful information of present condition of internet addiction
problem and suggestions to supplement the education materials.
