이 연구는 다문화가정의 저학년 아동들을 대상으로 ‘그림책을 활용한 표현활동 프로그램’을 구성 및 실시하여 문해능력에 대한 효과를 검증하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 경기도 부천시 의 다문화가정 2, 3학년 아동 15명이 총 16회기에 걸쳐 다양한 그림책의 내용과 표현기법을 탐색하며 표현활동에 참여하였고 창의적으로 세 권의 그림책을 창작하여 출판기념회를 열 었다. 동일지역의 저소득층 일반 아동 15명을 비교집단으로 하여 프로그램 시행 전후에 읽 기 유창성, 독해력, 받아쓰기 검사를 각각 실시하였다. 비모수검증인 맨 휘트니 유 검증과 윌콕슨 부호순위 검증 결과, 다문화가정 아동들은 사전검사에서 비교집단 아동들에 비해 읽 기 유창성, 독해력, 받아쓰기 모두 유의하게 낮은 수준으로 나타났다. 17주의 중재 이후에 다문화가정 아동들은 읽기 유창성과 독해력에서, 비교집단 아동들은 읽기 유창성에서 유의 한 향상을 보였다. 프로그램 시행 후에 받아쓰기에서는 여전히 집단 차이가 남아있었으나, 다문화가정 아동들의 두 가지 읽기 수행에서는 비교집단과의 차이가 사라졌다. 따라서 그림 책 활용 표현능력 프로그램은 문해능력, 그 중에서도 읽기능력 향상에 효과적인 프로그램이 라고 결론내릴 수 있다.
This study was conducted to verify the effects of an expressive activities program using picture books on the literacy abilities of multi-cultural children. Fifteen second and third grade elementary school students from multi-cultural families in Bucheon participated in this program. Their reading and writing abilities were tested before and after the whole program and compared with the scores of peers from low income families. The participants explored the texts and representation techniques of selected picture books and created their own picture books over 16 weeks. The results of Mann-whitney-U test and Wilcoxon signed- rank test are as follows. Before the program was implemented, multi-cultural children showed lower reading fluency, reading comprehension, and dictation scores than the comparative group. After the whole session was complete, however, the experimental group had significantly improved in terms of their reading fluency and reading comprehension. They had therefore they caught up with the comparative group in two reading abilities, despite a gap persisting in dictation scores. In conclusion, an expressive activities program using picture books is an effective method, especially for improving the reading abilities of multi- cultural children.
