“Qualitative Case Study of Gestalt on Foreigners’ Museum Learning:A case study of Vietnamese” examines the role of museum in the post-modern society. This study attempts to analyze how a visitor(named Thuy, a Vietnamese) totally, or Gestalt understanding of the museum’s contents and the entire structure, while the museum is responding to such understanding as the provider of the contents. Visitors experience the Korean society through museums and learn the Korean culture based on their individual cultural backgrounds. In order to relate the phenomenon of visitors internalizing, materializing, and maximizing their understanding of culture through museum experience with the museum’s role and function as a cultural institution of the post-modern society. First, this study observes how the understanding and recognition of Korean culture by a foreign visitor with a diverse cultural background through a museum experience based on their individual experience in Korea and their own culture relates to his or her culturally diverse background. Secondly, this study analyzes how the experience and the contents of a foreign visitor’s experience in a Korean museum is composed, using the Gestalt approach. Third, this study examines how much the display within the Korean museum, the museum’s program experience, and the objectives of providing such experience satisfy the wide range and methods of cultural recognition diversified by the foreign visitor’s individuality and generality. In conclusion, the observations and analysis involved in this study showed that the modern and postmodern factors coexisted in the education program for foreigners in the Korean museums. The coexistence shows that recently the social function of museums is in the process of rapidly becoming more post-modern. Also, the foreigner’s museum experience not only acts as a basic factor in approaching and recognizing the Korean culture regardless of what the museum offers but also has its own Gestalt approach as an attempt.
