In response to the legislation of the Character Education Act in 2015, elementary and secondary schools in South Korea have been required to implement character education in- and out-of-classrooms, from subject lessons through student guidance. Novice teachers, as compared to experienced teachers, might have more difficulties to practice character education due to their inexperience in terms of instructional techniques as well as student guidance. In order to suggest ways of how to better help novice elementary teachers who have little school experiences, this study examined elementary novice teachers’ perception on their experiences of curriculaum during their pre-service teacher education periods. Focus group interviews were conducted for novice teachers having graduated from four elementary teacher education institutions. The participating teachers reported that major subjects and electives related to understanding human beings and societies as well as subjects related to ethics, language arts, and special education helped them practice character education at the school level. Additionally, preparations for the teaching certificate examination were also found to be useful to make novice teachers to consider character education. Based on the findings, a number of suggestions to improve the curriculum of elementary teacher education institutions were made.
