The purpose of this study was to investigate the present situation and plan of the basic literacy education program for the visually impaired adults presented in the previous study and to search the direction of the literacy education program for the visually impaired adults. Based on these research objectives, the current status and methods of basic literacy education for blind and low vision disabled persons with visual disabilities were examined through domestic and foreign literature studies.
The result of this study have shown that individual basic education programs are needed depending on the level of visual impairment. Based on the results of the problem solving process, the direction of the literacy education program for the visually impaired adults is as follows. First, it is building a customized literacy education system considering the type of blindness. Second, it is necessary to improve the autonomy and participation of social activities as an adult with visual impairment by preparing a practical program that can be applied to the life cycle. Third, it is necessary to improve professionalism and educate specialists of lifelong education institutions for the visually impaired. Fourth, systematic programs for literacy education of the visually impaired should be spread.
This will contribute to improving the quality of the life-long learning literacy program for adults with visual impairment in the future, thereby improving the independent living and quality of life of the visually impaired.
