본 연구는 미국방언학회가 20세기 초 20년 동안에 선정한 올해의 단어(WOTY)를 통해 지난 20년을 돌아보면서 영어에 나타난 주요 변화를 살펴보고자 한다. 한 해에 하나씩 선정되는 올해의 단어를 분석해서 영어에 나타난 변화를 전부 파악할 수는 없지만 변화의 중요한 일부분을 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 인터넷 관련 단어가 네 차례에 걸쳐 선정되는 것은 정보통신기술이 우리 생활의 중요한 부분을 차지하게 되었다는 것을 보여준다. 둘째, 규범문법에 따르면 비문법적인 표현이 신속하고 효율 적인 의사소통을 위해 혁신적이고 창의적으로 사용되고 있다는 점이다. 셋째, 단어의 품사가 당해 연도의 중요한 문제를 더욱 흥미롭고 설득력 있게 표현하기 위해 확장되어 사용되고 있다는 것이다. 올해의 단어를 대상으로 한 본 연구는 영어 교육자 및 학습자에게 21세기 초에 나타난 미국의 사회문화적 변화와 영어의 변화 모습을 이해하는데 도움이 될 것이다.
This study examines the changes in English by looking over the Word of the Year (by American Dialect Society) for the first twenty years (2000-2019) of the 21 century. Analyzing the 20 words of the year can not reveal the full picture of the changes in English but the analysis can show some important aspects of the changes. The findings of the study as follows. First, the internet-related words are chosen four times and this shows the communication technology has become a big part of our lives. Second, radical grammatical changes which could be considered ungrammatical by school grammar are used in informal communications for the speedy and efficient writing. Third, the traditional grammatical category of English words have been expanded to express the important issues of the year in a more interesting and convincing way. This study will help the teachers and learners of English to understand the crucial changes in sociocultural aspects as well as linguistic aspects in the United States.
