This study examined the effectiveness of group art therapy for patients with schizophrenia through systematic review and meta-analysis. In addition, the study provides data for the application of practical intervention methods by showing the scientific bases. To this end, the domestic studies published up until September 2020, were reviewed under PRISMA criteria, and the results of the meta-analysis of the final 25 studies selected were as follows. The effect size of group art therapy for patients with schizophrenia was 0.819 and it means significant in the effect. In the case of dependent variables among the intervention-related characteristics, the effect sizes of other areas, positive psychological and emotional areas, sociality, ego, schizophrenic symptoms, and negative psychological and emotional areas were shown to be large in order accordingly. What is more, the differences of the effect size between the groups were statistically significant. In the case of moderating variables among the intervention-related characteristics, the difference of effect sizes between specific media and techniques and mixed media and techniques was statistically significant, while between other moderating variables the difference of effect sizes was not statistically significant. This study provides directions for clinical settings based on the comprehensive analysis of the results of the individual studies pertaining to the use of group art therapy for patients with schizophrenia.
