Catholic universities, accredited by the Catholic Church, have the general character of holistic education and the ecclesial character of evangelization (of the world). The Catholic universities understand both their identity and their mission: to discover true human values in Jesus Christ, “the way, the truth, and the life”(Jn 14,6), and thereby to realize the highest value of the holistic education, which is Christian human formation. General religious education plays an important role in materializing this identity and mission. In the face of issues around values in pluralist society, problems of human alienation and human instrumentalization, and problems caused by the viewpoints considering faith and reason as opposition to each other, the Catholic universities have to read signs of a rapidly changing era through the general religious education they offer. And by reflecting on the anthropological perspective of the signs, the universities must constantly strive to build the kingdom of God through the proclamation of the gospel appropriate for this reflection. Thus, the Songsim campus of the Catholic University of Korea, most of all, provides the basis for the inter-disciplinary cooperation, as well as for the ‘integration of perception’ among disciplines, focusing on Christian human values in the ‘Anthropology’ course. In the ‘Spirituality’ course introducing the true meaning of ‘human-being’ and its extremes in the teachings of Jesus Christ, students find out the reason and validity(legitimacy) of how ‘the conversation between faith and reason’ is possible. And finally, the ‘Sharing of Love’ course offers students with volunteer opportunities, through which the students can practice the knowledge they have learned in ‘Anthropology’ and ‘Spirituality’ courses, and realize the importance of balanced harmony of ‘knowledge’ and ‘practice.’ In spite of these efforts, the shortcomings that still remain in the general religious education of the Catholic University of Korea and the suggestions for solving them are summarized as follows. First, after the course of ‘Spirituality’, it is necessary to open advanced courses on ‘Theological Perspective’ that can deepen the contents of ‘Spirituality’. Second, lay professors who experience difficulties and limitations in lecturing ‘Spirituality’ course should be provided with opportunities for fostering their knowledge through continuous and advanced educations and researches on truths of the Christian revelation. Third, it is necessary to re-introduce relative evaluation to correct the misunderstanding that ‘Spirituality’ course based on theology deals with the area of individual beliefs, and to improve students’ attitudes. Fourth, in order to attain the goal of developing Christian character through the general religious education, the lecture needs to be accompanied with continuous personal encounters and conversation between professor and student. Fifth, in order to realize the goal of cultivating the ‘Catholic Spirit,’ which is pursued by the general religious education of the Catholic University of Korea, it is necessary to promote academic and cultural exchanges among the students of three campuses. Sixth, the Catholic University of Korea needs to exert effort to improve the quality of the general religious education by mutual cooperation with neighboring religions.
