현대 뇌과학은 인간존재를 생물학적 뇌의 진화와 중층적 의식의 통합으로서 바라보고 있고, 마음이란 뇌의 생리학적 산물이며 우리가 어떤 대상을 인식한다는 것은 각자에게 틀지어진 ‘세계 모형(스키마)’을 통해서 인식할 뿐이라는 점을 시사하고 있다. 한편 동학은 1905년 천도교로 개칭되면서 서구과학을 소개하였는데, 이돈화는 동학에 서구 진화론과 뇌과학을 접목하여 한울사상을 “지기(至氣)의 무위이화적(無爲而化的) 진화론”이라 명명한 바 있다. 이는 물심일원(物心一元)의 진화로서 정신과 물질은 한울 지기생명의 두 가지 현상이고, 통화(通化)와 분화(分化)를 통해 전개되는 개체와 환경의 공진화(共進化)이다. 통화와 분화는 해월이 말한 일리만수(一理萬殊)의 현대적 해석으로서 ‘무기물-식물-동물-사람의식계’의 가지계(可知界)에서 비가지계(非可知界)의 ‘무궁성의 의식계’로 나가는 의식의 진화이다. 따라서 동학의 교육은 우주의식의 진화로서 무위이화의 도를 직각(直覺)하여 무궁성의 의식을 발현하고, 개체적 인격이 아닌 全우주격으로 사는 우주생활의 확립에 있다고 볼 수 있다. 즉 ‘나는 곧 우주’라는 직각에 근간을 두어 우주격을 자신의 인간격으로 발현하고 이를 창조함으로써 의식의 진화를 이루어가는 마음교육이다.

At that time, Donhwa Lee(李敦化) incorporated Western evolution and brain theory into Donghak(東學) and Hanul’s philosophy was called “the evolutionary theory of Jiki(至氣)” by him. Jiki(至氣) is in all things, constantly changing, and penetrating all things as universal energy. This is the evolution of the coevolution of the individual and the environment that develops through the penetration of cosmic consciousness and differentiated. And the spirit and substance is the two phenomena of the life of Jiki(至氣). The evolution of the penetration of cosmic consciousness and differentiated are the modern interpretations of Ilimansu(一理萬殊) in Haewol (海月) thought. This is an endless evolution that goes to the infinitive consciousness of the unknown world, as well as the known world of the ‘inorganic-plant-animal-human consciousness’. Therefore, the education of Donghak is to directly realize the truth of the changes without doing(無爲而化) as evolution of universal consciousness. And it is in the establishment of the universe life that lives in the entire universe, not the individual personality. And this would be called mind education based on the fact that “I am the universe”.
