The Korean educational circle is required to study on which relationship the school curriculum and the character education can have than ever due to the Character Education Promotion Law. In this regard, the correlation between one of the elective curricula of liberal arts, ‘the science of religion’, according to the current national curriculum, and the character education is needed to be reviewed. Thus this study intends to find how ‘the religion education as the liberal education’ performed in the middle and high schools of Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (hereinafter called FFWPU) is connected to the character education and can be activated. The core of the curriculum contents, in which the religion education of the middle and high schools of FFWPU and the character education are connected, is related to the lessons in the universal moral level sought for by religion. The religion education of the middle and high schools of FFWPU emphasizes the aspect that a student should throw away his/her selfish inclination and be seeking for the desirable relationship with others through the moral life and the practice of the life that cares for others. Further, such religion education makes students also learn the attitudes that consider and respect multiple religions through understanding various religions. This study as the measure for activating the character education through the religion education for the middle and high schools of FFWPU suggested; first, since the religion education of the middle and high schools of FFWPU is performed within the range of the curriculum of ‘the science of religion’ at the national level, the overall review of the curriculum of ‘the science of religion’ is inevitable. Second, this study suggested that the religion education class should be accompanied by the level that endows an opportunity of self-examination to students through using various character education-related methods and materials. However, it is considered it should be recognized that the activating of the character education through the ‘religion education as the liberal education’ has the limitation, in that the curriculum of ‘the science of religion’ is not regarded as the same to the curriculum of the moral education.
