이 연구는 가톨릭의 대안교육의 필요성과 교육적 원리를 고찰한 것이다. 한국 교육이 안고 있는 문제를 교육적 무능, 공교육 붕괴, 3무(無) 교육, 공부의 시대의 종언으로 요약하고, 또한 가톨릭 학교교육이 역사적으로 노출하고 있던 문제를 가톨릭 정체성, 종교교육, 교사의 태도, 한국교육에 영향력을 관점에서 비판적으로 정리하였다. 한국에서 가톨릭 교육은 대안적 교육을 실천하여 가톨릭 학교교육을 다시 부흥시키고 침체된 한국 교육계에 모범 사례를 제시하여야 한다. 이를 위해 가톨릭의 ‘대안교육’을 성공적으로 성취하기 위한 일곱 가지 원리를 제시하였다. 이 원리를 핵심적인 개념들, 즉 새로운 복음화(new evangelization), 통전성(wholeness), 영성(spirituality), 공동체(community), 작은 학교(small schools), 신학적 생태주의(theological ecologism), 소명인 교직(teacher as a vocation)을 중심으로 상술하였다. 마지막으로, 가톨릭 대안교육을 실천할 두 가지 방향에 제안하였는데, 하나는 기존의 가톨릭 학교를 위의 원리를 적용하면서 보완하는 방향이고 다른 하나는 새로운 교육적 패러다임으로 가톨릭 대안학교를 설립하는 방향으로, 이 두 가지 방안에 관해 구체적 제언을 하였다.
The purpose of this study is to investigate that why the Catholic alternative education should be needed and what kinds of principles should be applied to the Catholic alternative education. For accomplishing this purpose, this study revealed the problems facing today’s Korean school education and those of the Catholic school education as well. The problems of the Korean school education could be summarized as incapability, collapse of public education system, ‘three-loss’education, and the end of era of study. While the problems of the Catholic school education could be categorized into such issues as new evangelization, wholeness, spirituality, community, small school, theological ecologism, and teacher as a vocation. Finally, this study suggests two directions for the Catholic alternative education in Korea. First, the existing Catholic schools should be reformed by using seven principles described above. Second, new Catholic school with new paradigm of Catholic education using the same principles.
