서방과 무슬림 세계의 정치, 경제, 문화적 갈등이 지속됨에 따라 충돌을 방지하고 공존을 모색하기 위한 이슬람과 비이슬람 전통 간 대화의 중요성이 날로 강조되고 있다. 그러나 이슬람 고유의 소통구조, 즉 자신의 전통을 이해하고 타인을 바라보는 틀을 고려하지 않고 시도하는 대화에서 진지한 결과를 기대하기는 어렵다. 필자는 그러한 틀을 주류 종파인 순니(Sunnī) 전통의 샤리아(harī⊂ah 이슬람법)로 본다. 그리하여 본문에서 하나님과 예언자 무함마드의 소통의 장(場)인 꾸란(Qur⊃ān), 예언자 무함마드와 무슬림 공동체의 대면(對面)의 장인 하디스(Ḥadīth), 이 두 텍스트를 근간으로 무슬림 공동체가 하나님의 법을 탐색하는 데 중요한 장치로 작동한 이즈마(Ijmā⊂, 합의 合意)와 끼야스(Qiyās, 유추 類推) 등 전통 샤리아의 제1법원(法源)이 지닌 구조와 원리를 일별하며 무슬림이 세상과 대화하고 소통하는 틀을 설명한다. 이를 통해 비무슬림의 이슬람 이해를 도와 종교간 대화에 일조하고, 무슬림에게는 다원화된 현대 사회에서 이슬람 전통이 외부세계와 의미 있게 소통하려면 샤리아가 제공하는 틀에서 소통, 공존, 대화에 대한 하나님의 보편적인 가르침을 재해석할 것과 아울러 현대적 독법(讀法)을 위한 여러 개념적 장치들을 발굴하여 가르치는 종교교육의 필요성을 제안한다.
Due to political, economic and cultural conflict between the West and the Muslim world, the importance of engaging interfaith dialogue with Muslims has become more widely recognized. One cannot, however, expect to glean a meaningful result from interfaith dialogue that is tried without being considered an Islamic frame of reference which Muslims use to understand their tradition and to form their perception of non-Muslims. This essay finds an Islamic frame of reference for communication in the traditional Sunnī shar⊂ī vision, and examines a mechanism of communication between God and men as exemplified in the four sources of the law: (1) Qur⊃ān as the venue for communication between God and the Prophet; (2) Ḥadīth between the Prophet and Muslims; (3) Ijmā⊂ and Qiyās through which Muslims endeavor to discover God’s law. An assessment of the mechanism would bring us to the conclusion that meaningful interfaith dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims in a religiously plural modern world depends on the Muslim education that teaches how to reinterpret within the context of modern society the messages contained in the Qur⊃ān and the Ḥadīth.
