본 논문은 기독교계 사립학교(이하, 기독교학교)에서의 종교교육의 새로운 방향을 탐색하는 것으로써, 특히 최근 국회에 제출된 초․중등교육법 개정안에 대한 비판적 고찰을 시도하고 그 대안을 찾는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 본 논문은 기독교학교의 입장에 서서 다음과 같은 세 가지의 주제를 고찰한다. 첫 번째의 연구주제는 종교교육과 관련하여 현재 한국 초․중등학교에서 겪고 있는 갈등에 관한 것으로써, 교육목적의 갈등, 교육과정의 갈등, 교육제도의 갈등의 측면을 살펴본다. 우선 교육목적의 갈등 부분에서는 설립이념과 대학입시에 초점을 맞춘 교육목표 사이의 갈등의 문제가 다뤄진다. 교육과정의 갈등은 제7차 종교 교육과정이 종교학적이고 교양교육적인 측면에서 시행되고 있는 관계로 신앙교육적 종교교육을 지향하려는 기독교학교들과 겪게 되는 갈등의 문제를 다룬다. 그리고 교육제도 상의 갈등은 평준화제도가 안고 있는 한계로 인해 발생되는 문제점들이 검토된다. 두 번째의 연구주제는 기독교학교에서의 종교교육과 관련하여 최근 관련 학계의 기본적 방향을 살펴본다. 여기서는 기독교학교가 학교교육의 두 전통 곧 종교 및 이성 사이의 조화의 전통에 따라 신앙과 이성 사이의 종합을 지향할 것과, 종교와 교육의 관계가 서로 대립적인 관계가 아니라 상보적 관계임을 인식할 것, 그리고 종교교육 대상과 형태에 있어서 다양화 및 투명화의 필요성이 진술된다. 끝으로 세 번째의 연구주제는 앞서 고찰된 논의에 근거하여 현재 국회에 제출된 초․중등교육법 개정 법률안과 관련하여 기독교학교의 대응에 대하여 고찰한다. 여기서 연구자는 종교교육과 관련한 모호한 법조항들을 가능하면 속히 정리할 것과 함께, 교육당국은 향후 종교교육과 관련하여 이중 전략을 지향할 것을 제안한다. 그것은 헌법 및 교육기본법의 정신에 따라 기독교학교에 대해서는 종교교육의 자유를 허락하는 것이고, 국․공립학교에 대해서는 중립적인 종교교육을 시행하는 것이다.
The aim of this article is critically to investigate the religious education which happens at the elementary and secondary school in Korea. According to fact that some members of National Assembly of Korea recently have proposed a revised educational bill toward more strong neutral orientation of religious education in all the elementary and secondary school in Korea, this article deals with three issues by the perspective of Christian private school like below. First of all, this essay is to analyses several conflicts about religious education at school including conflict of educational aims, conflict of curriculum, and conflict of educational system of Korea. Second, the common arguments about religious education in academical field are verified in terms of reciprocal relationship between the meaning of religion and education, harmonious origins and development of Western schools between faith-based Hebrew tradition and rational-based Greek tradition, various types of religious education at school, and administrative transparency of Christian school. Lastly, on the basis of some academical common arguments about religious education at school, this article suggests double strategies for religious education in Korea. In other words, in the educational context where the separation between the state-based school and the private school in Korea is very difficult, for the Christian schools who are interested in their faith education, Christian value-laden religious education is needed; however, for those who are only interested in just value-free religious education like the state-based school it is needed toward the neutral point view of religious education.
